Botox

What is Botox?

Botulinum toxin treatments acts by relaxing your muscles and relieving the sadness, tiredness and angry facial expressions. It does not treat the skin directly, but by stretching the muscles and the skin as consequence.

Despite being a toxin, it is really safe, as it is used in very tiny amounts and does not stay in the body for more than 48 hours.

How does it work?

When injected in the wrinkles, the botulinum toxin blocks the transmission from the neurons to the muscles, preventing the muscle contraction. This blockage despite being irreversible is temporary because the body tries to build new transmission routes after some time.

About its duration

In a person with normal metabolism, full effect may last up to 4 months, with partial effect remaining up to 6 months in some cases.

If you are an athlete, a smoker, or expose yourself a lot to the sun, you will need to reapply earlier than that. That also may be necessary if you suffer from any condition that speeds up your metabolism.

Is it painful?

We use several techniques to reduce the discomfort: a set of custom-made microneedle syringe, dilution in a physiological pH balanced solution, and a special vibrating device to soothe the pain. Also, pinching, tapping or earlobe massage techniques may be performed.

We can also use a numb cream at your request, 30 minutes before start the application. Also, a good tip is to avoid doing it near your period, as this increases sensitivity and bruising.

After the application

The result is not immediately and takes a few days to 14 days to become apparent. It’s important to repeat the injections every 3 to 6 months to maintain the smooth, natural appearance.

You should not exercise in the same day of the procedure (unless, of course, you already exercised that day).

If you have a big event coming the best time to apply is a month before, avoiding any bruising and swelling that eventually happens, and given a safe time for small touch ups are necessary.

Misconceptions

There are a few misconceptions about the use of Botulinum Toxin.

Some associate cases of hypervolumization after it’s use. That is not possible as this product does not volumizes, and it does not stay in the skin for long.

Another common myth is that you are going to lose your facial expression. Despite that being possible, this depends on the professional that is applying. Too look for a natural balance is what every professional usually do, but make sure you discuss your expectations properly with your Doctor.

A third and last misconception is that Botox is the only and better solution for all cosmetic issues. A multimodality approach, based on your very own assessment is the best way to go. Laxity problems, textural issues, pigmentation, lack of contour, projection of the cheekbones and jawline require other cosmetic techniques to be associated.

Botox is very popular because brings safe, quick and natural results with a minimal downtime and side-effect profile. Arrange your consultation with our Aesthetic Dermatologists and Plastic Surgeon to know more!
